2023 Seasonal Internship Opportunity
The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is accepting applications for a paid seasonal position starting in March 2023. Part of EPA’s National Estuary Program, the Maryland Coastal Bays Program is a non-profit dedicated to preserving and restoring the waters and watershed near Assateague Island and Ocean City, Maryland. Our mission is “to protect and conserve the waters and surrounding watershed of Maryland’s Coastal Bays to enhance their ecological and sustainable use for both present and future generations”.
Position Description
The Maryland Coastal Bays Program is seeking a qualified applicant for an environmental science internship. We are looking for a highly motivated upper-level undergraduate or recent graduate majoring in environmental science/studies, earth science, marine science, environmental education, or other related fields. This position will run for roughly 28 weeks at 40 hours a week from mid-March through September, but exact start and end dates are flexible. This position is a seasonal one with no benefits and pays $19/hr.
The selected candidate will predominantly be assisting the science team with wetland assessments, wildlife surveys, invasive plant removal, water quality monitoring, citizen science programs, and data entry and analysis. Additional opportunities include assisting with colonial nesting bird monitoring, horseshoe crab surveys, environmental education programs, and conducting field studies with partner organizations such as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
**In addition to assisting the science team, the selected candidate will oversee the Stranded Spawning Horseshoe Crab Recovery Team. Responsibilities for this include:
Recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers and creating a volunteer schedule
Collecting and analyzing data
Creating a short educational video, writing social media posts, and potential signage to be placed at horseshoe crab spawning locations.
Qualifications:
Must be comfortable working long hours in various weather conditions in the field and able to lift 25lbs
Basic computer skills including Canva, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
Ability to work independently as well as part of a small, dynamic team
Strong organizational and professional skills, and capability of prioritizing and managing diverse tasks
Desired Qualifications:
Experience in citizen science/ volunteer programs
Creative/design skills for social media and outreach materials
General knowledge of watershed, aquatic/marine ecosystems, and native species in the Coastal Bays
