SUMMARY:Jenkins Point Restoration for Resilience Community Update Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Maryland Coastal Bays Program will host a public meeting on the Jenkins Point Restoration Project on Monday\, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Clubhouse Meeting Room on 100 Clubhouse Drive. \n\nMCBP held a public meeting on the subject last May\, and the Jan. 29 meeting will serve as an update\, including presentation of a revised project design for which community feedback will be solicited. \n\nSteve Farr\, the Watershed Coordinator for Maryland Coastal Bays Program\, said Jenkins Point is on the Isle of Wight Bay\, just offshore of the Ocean Pines Yacht Club. He said the area has seen significant erosion\, reducing the resilience of the fragmented peninsula and the adjacent mainland community infrastructure\, including the Yacht Club\, the Osprey Point condominium community and the Pines Point residential community and marina to the increasing effects of climate change. \n\nMCBP received a grant in 2022 from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to fund the design and permitting phase of the restoration project. Construction of the project will require additional funding. \n\nTo attend the meeting virtually\, use the invite link: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_M2ZmNGE2MzktZTQwOC00ODg2LTk2MDctNzhhNmE5YjE4OWY4%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22625a6322-2b2f-40fa-94f8-d7dd44d78153%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%221bbee60b-d4e0-49eb-b4c6-d257cae7f063%22%7d. \n\nThe meeting will be recorded and available for viewing later through the Ocean Pines website\, oceanpines.org.

SUMMARY:Nature Meditation Experience
DESCRIPTION:Come spend an hour and half with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program immersing oneself in the nature surrounding the Sinepuxent Bay. Participants will be led through a meditation series to deepen their relationship with the natural spaces around them as well as enhance their observation skills. This experience will take place on Thursday August 31st from 5 – 6:30 pm at the Assateague Living Shoreline. \nIn this program\, we will spend time deepening our self-awareness. SUMMARY:Annual Terrapin Survey
DESCRIPTION:Terrapin Survey & Training \nEvery year MCBP hosts an  annual Terrapin Survey and help survey for our State reptile! Click here to learn more about the survey and how you can participate in this citizen science program. \nThe Maryland Coastal Bays Program has been collecting a variety of data relating to diamondback terrapin populations in the Coastal Bays. Organized terrapin headcount surveys began in 2012 in collaboration with Maryland DNR and other members of the diamondback terrapin work group. \nCounts take place both on water and on land. From motorboats to kayaks and SUPs\, all are encouraged to participate. Terrapins are the only turtle occupying brackish water\, but other turtles\, such as snapping turtles\, may venture into more brackish water\, so it is important that you can identify the correct species. Terrapin Survey Training Presentation \nLocations of surveys depend on the number of crews that are available and may take place in all of Maryland’s Coastal Bays. You can register HERE \nIf you have any questions on this survey\, please contact Sandi Smith at sandis@mdcoastalbays.org.

SUMMARY:Give-A-Day for the Bays:Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to November’s Give-A-Day and our topic of RECYCLING! So\, what the heck does recycling even mean?! Well\, in the U.S.\, recycling means collecting materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and remanufacturing them into new products. There are many economic and environmental benefits to recycling and November 15th specifically (America’s Recycle Day) is a day dedicated to celebrating and encouraging the process. \nWe encourage you to research the recycling guidelines for your area to be sure you are recycling in the most efficient and effective way (Town of Berlin and City of Salisbury guidelines can be found below!). MCBP also always encourages the REDUCE portion of the three R’s\, which is simply trying to reduce the amount of trash we generate… having less things! \nTo learn more about America Recycles Day click here \nTown of Berlin recycling guidelines click here  \nCity of Salisbury recycling guidelines click here   \nAlso\, looking towards Thanksgiving…. Are looking to prepare a more environmentally-friendly meal this Thanksgiving? Minimize your meat consumption\, purchase locally-grown ingredients\, produce less food waste\, use reusable dinnerware\, and consider celebrating at home! Check out MCBP’s Facebook and Instagram to learn more about sustainable alternatives.

SUMMARY:Give-A-Day for the Bays:Birds\, Bats and Bugs
DESCRIPTION:Birds\, bats\, bees\, bugs… oh my! \nAs we dive into fall\, let’s take a moment to acknowledge some unsung heroes of spring and summer… pollinators! Pollination occurs when pollen is carried from the male part of a flower (stamen) to the female part (stigma) of another flower. When this happens\, the plant is now fertilized and can produce fruits\, seeds\, and young plants. Pollination is an essential ecological function that ensures the survival of all life on earth. This vital process can occur a few different ways: self-pollination\, via wind or water\, and (the one we are focusing on) via animals and insects. \nDid you know that 80% of crop plants grown around the world require pollination by animals or insects? This means that those plants could not reproduce without the help of creatures like beetles\, wasps\, ants\, bees\, flies\, bats\, moths\, hummingbirds\, butterflies\, and more! These creatures\, known as pollinators\, travel to these plants for food (they either eat the nectar\, or the pollen)\, shelter\, or to find a mate\, and then pollen attaches itself to the pollinator and when the pollinator moves to a new plant\, that pollen is distributed. \nIn the Coastal Bays\, and around the world\, pollinator populations are declining primarily because of habitat loss and inappropriate (and excessive) use of pesticides and herbicides. The most important pollinators in Maryland are bees and butterflies (we have 400 species of bees in Maryland!) and their habitat is declining. Many backyard habitat practices can help a variety of wildlife\, including pollinators! Below are a few resources to help you start creating pollinator friendly habitat: \nAttracting Pollinators to Your Garden (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) \nBee Friendly Backyards (Maryland DNR) \nPollinator Certification Program (Lower Shore Land Trust) \nWhat’s the Buzz: All About Pollinators (Maryland DNR) \nIf you or your family are interested in learning more about the specific pollinators in your very own backyard\, check out this great pollinator journal from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and head outside to explore! \nIt is very important for homeowners\, gardeners\, farmers\, and businesses alike to plant native plants to help support local pollinators. Native plants are adapted to our local climate and soil conditions\, meaning they require less water\, fertilizer\, and pesticides to maintain\, and they are fantastic habitat and food source for local pollinators. To learn more about\, and find a comprehensive list of local native plants\, check out the Lower Shore Land Trust’s 2021 native plant guide. \nBats are a lesser-known pollinator that provide many ecological services such as pest consumption and seed dispersal\, along with pollination. To learn more about these often misunderstood creatures\, check out Bat Conservation International’s Bat 101. \n\nTo learn more about the process of pollination in general\, and its importance\, click here: https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/importance.shtml

SUMMARY:Give-A-Day for the Bays:Help Needed for our Horseshoe Crab
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) die each year from stranding (stuck upside down) during their yearly spawning ritual. \n                                                                \nThis year has become a very taxing year for our prehistoric natives as the spawning season started later than normal due to water temperatures\, creating a mass rush of activity that appears to be creating more stranding opportunities\, resulting in higher mortality occurrences. \nWe need your help to reduce the rising mortality rate. It’s simple\, we need you to take the time to look for stranded live horseshoe crabs and to assist them by simply picking them up by the edge of the shell and flipping them over. If they are stuck in rocks\, pick them up and place them in the water. \nIt’s important to NEVER flip them by their tail. Even though it looks scary\, the tail is very delicate and is easily damaged.  Once damaged\, the horseshoe crab is rendered helpless. Simply turn it over by the edge of its shell. No need to be cautious; the horseshoe crab doesn’t bite\, or sting and its claws are very gentle and won’t hurt you. See here \nWe have a few hotspots that need attention for the next several weeks. If you are interested in volunteering to monitor and assist at some of the hotspots\, please contact Environmental Scientist Carly Toulan at ctoulan@mdcoastalbays.org \nAnd when you go please: \n\nWear shoes that have a good grip and can get wet. The rocks can be slippery at times so be careful!\nSign a volunteer waiver before going out.\nBest time to go out is at low or mid tide when horseshoe crabs are stranded.\nHorseshoe crabs are harmless\, they will not sting\, pinch\, or stab you BUT still be careful when handling them.\nPick spawning pairs up together\, the males will stay attached and both can be carried together.\nIf you feel like it\, please send pictures of you saving horseshoe crabs or stranded crabs and send them to Carly at ctoulan@mdcoastalbays.org.

SUMMARY:Give-A-Day for the Bays:Horseshoe Crabs
DESCRIPTION:This month we honor the Horseshoe Crabs\, have you seen them at the beach yet? \nMCBP assists the Department of Natural Resources with an annual horseshoe survey. Click here for more details. \nJune marks the beginning of spawning season for these amazing prehistoric inhabitants of our waterways. And this species has been saving our lives for decades. Their blood reacts strongly to bacterial infections and is used to test for bacterial contamination of medical equipment-like that syringe that gave you your covid shot. \nRight now the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Atlantic horseshoe crab as ‘vulnerable’\, just one step below endangered. \nSo for this month\, and for the rest of the summer\, you can help horseshoe crabs in you own small way. If you find one on the beach that’s been flipped upside down\, turn it righ side up so it can go on its way. For creatures that have been saving our lives for decades\, it’s the least we can do. \nCheck out the  Just flip ’em!™ program.  It is a great program designed to bring attention to the hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) who die each year from stranding (stuck upside down) during their yearly spawning ritual and to encourage individuals\, through a simple act of compassion\, to take the time to assist and appreciate these remarkable creatures. \nJust flip ’em™ Program – Horseshoe Crab
