SUMMARY:Storybook Walk Ribbon Cutting for "Keep Our Beaches Clean! What if Everybody Did That?"
DESCRIPTION:What started as an idea to further promote local stewardship and awareness surrounding trash clean ups\, has metamorphosed into a multi-partner endeavor to bring a story to life. Maryland Coastal Bays Program\, in collaboration with the Town of Ocean City\, Plak That\, 1% for the Planet\, and Di angelo Publications\, has implemented a Storybook Walk for the locally authored “Keep Our Beaches Clean! What If Everybody Did That?” at the newly renovated Bayside Park at 3rd Street in downtown Ocean City. \n\nStorybook Walks are a wonderful way to expand literacy all the while enjoying some outdoor exercise. They typically feature large scale pages of a book chronologically placed along a trail\, or\, in this case\, a bayside boardwalk. This specific walk spotlights\, “Keep Our Beaches Clean! What If Everybody Did That?”\, a book written by an inspiring class of Showell Elementary School 2nd graders in collaboration with professional surfer Kelly Slater. The book was released this past spring by Di angelo Publications. Mackenzie Keyser\, the facilitating teacher from Showell Elementary says\, “the students and I are so thrilled\, and honored\, to have ‘Keep Our Beaches Clean! What If Everybody Did That?’ made into a Storybook Walk! Our hopes are that through this extension of the book\, children from all over will be eager to help do their part to keep our beaches clean!” \n\nAs they approach the Storybook Walk\, visitors will encounter a panel that outlines how to use the walk. As they continue\, readers will embark on a story about how the choices we make can impact the beach and the critters that live there. It ends with a panel that includes a QR code that links to more resources such as a lesson plan that compliments the book. These panels were created with ideas from all the partners and brought to life by local graphic designer Mark Huey. The event will feature guest speakers\, including Mackenzie Keyser\, an official ribbon cutting\, and a book signing by the student authors themselves! There will be books on site for purchase from Coastal Bays\, or attendees can bring their own to get signed.

SUMMARY:Disappearing Islands: A Turn of Events - Presentation Series
DESCRIPTION:Islands serve as critical habitat to numerous iconic species found in the Maryland Coastal Bays. Throughout the last several decades\, island loss and the impacts it has on species like colonial nesting bird populations have been alarming. But there is still hope to restore these once abundant islands and the populations of our colonial nesting birds. \nPlease join the Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) for a series of presentations that will dive deeper into the history of island loss\, the iconic species that depend on them\, and ways we are working to combat this issue. \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Selsey Road Restoration Grass Planting
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for volunteers to help plant grasses generously donated by the West Ocean City Association.\n\n\nWe ask that all volunteers wear close-toed shoes\, appropriate outdoor clothing\, bring their own reusable water bottle\, bug spray\, and gardening gloves if they’d like to. MCBP will have tools available to help dig holes. Volunteers will need to sign a waiver upon arrival. As parking is limited\, we thought we’d stretch out the time period so don’t feel obligated to arrive for the beginning nor stay the duration. Though some of us will be celebrating at Waterman’s Restaurant afterwards and would love volunteers to join us!\n\nJust a heads up\, there is no bathroom at this site. \n\nA email will be sent out the week of the event with reminders and detailed location instructions.\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Jenkins Point Restoration for Resilience Community Update Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Maryland Coastal Bays Program will host a public meeting on the Jenkins Point Restoration Project on Monday\, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Clubhouse Meeting Room on 100 Clubhouse Drive. \n\nMCBP held a public meeting on the subject last May\, and the Jan. 29 meeting will serve as an update\, including presentation of a revised project design for which community feedback will be solicited. \n\nSteve Farr\, the Watershed Coordinator for Maryland Coastal Bays Program\, said Jenkins Point is on the Isle of Wight Bay\, just offshore of the Ocean Pines Yacht Club. He said the area has seen significant erosion\, reducing the resilience of the fragmented peninsula and the adjacent mainland community infrastructure\, including the Yacht Club\, the Osprey Point condominium community and the Pines Point residential community and marina to the increasing effects of climate change. \n\nMCBP received a grant in 2022 from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to fund the design and permitting phase of the restoration project. Construction of the project will require additional funding. \n\nTo attend the meeting virtually\, use the invite link: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_M2ZmNGE2MzktZTQwOC00ODg2LTk2MDctNzhhNmE5YjE4OWY4%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22625a6322-2b2f-40fa-94f8-d7dd44d78153%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%221bbee60b-d4e0-49eb-b4c6-d257cae7f063%22%7d. \n\nThe meeting will be recorded and available for viewing later through the Ocean Pines website\, oceanpines.org.

SUMMARY:Nature Meditation Experience
DESCRIPTION:Come spend an hour and half with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program immersing oneself in the nature surrounding the Sinepuxent Bay. Participants will be led through a meditation series to deepen their relationship with the natural spaces around them as well as enhance their observation skills. This experience will take place on Thursday August 31st from 5 – 6:30 pm at the Assateague Living Shoreline. \nIn this program\, we will spend time deepening our self-awareness. These skills will then be used to enhance our observation abilities. Observation is a foundation for exploration\, a key instrument in the naturalist’s tool belt. We hope all participants will come with an open mind to fully engage in this program. \nOpen to all ages. Please bring a reusable water bottle. This is a free program\, but it does cost $5 to park at Assateague State Park Marina Parking Lot. If you have an ASP pass this will cover the cost. An email with detailed directions will be sent a few days before the event. \nPlease contact Greg Atkin at\, gatkin@mdcoastalbays.org with any questions.\n________________________________________ \n\nRegister HERE
