SUMMARY:Give-A-Day for the Bays:Horseshoe Crabs
DESCRIPTION:This month we honor the Horseshoe Crabs\, have you seen them at the beach yet? \nMCBP assists the Department of Natural Resources with an annual horseshoe survey. Click here for more details. \nJune marks the beginning of spawning season for these amazing prehistoric inhabitants of our waterways. And this species has been saving our lives for decades. Their blood reacts strongly to bacterial infections and is used to test for bacterial contamination of medical equipment-like that syringe that gave you your covid shot. \nRight now the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Atlantic horseshoe crab as ‘vulnerable’\, just one step below endangered. \nSo for this month\, and for the rest of the summer\, you can help horseshoe crabs in you own small way. If you find one on the beach that’s been flipped upside down\, turn it righ side up so it can go on its way. For creatures that have been saving our lives for decades\, it’s the least we can do. \nCheck out the  Just flip ’em!™ program.  It is a great program designed to bring attention to the hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) who die each year from stranding (stuck upside down) during their yearly spawning ritual and to encourage individuals\, through a simple act of compassion\, to take the time to assist and appreciate these remarkable creatures. \nJust flip ’em™ Program – Horseshoe Crab

Nature can use all the help it can get!\nOne of the best resources for celebrating native plants is the University of Maryland Extension \nThe University of Maryland Extension is a great resource to get you started. It is a statewide\, non-formal education system within the college of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.\nUME educational programs and problem-solving assistance are available to citizens. You can even contact them through their website with questions and/or concerns on your gardening. Click here \nAnd when thinking about gardening\, think about rain gardens for your low\, damp challenging areas. The Environmental Protection Agency has some great tips. Click here \nThere are two great resources for purchasing native plants: \nLower Shore Land Trust Plant Sale \nAssateague Coastal Trust Plant Sale \nBoth organizations are hosting a sale on May 1st \nQuality plants while also supporting notable local causes for our environment!

DESCRIPTION:It’s Market Madness Month – Support your local farmer markets and watermen \n\nAs we head into Spring\, for this month’s “Give-A-Day” back to MCBP\, we encourage you to explore our watershed’s local farmer and seafood markets for your spring and summer cravings! \nWhen possible\, buying food from local sources is a great way to reduce environmental impact. Local farmers and watermen implement practices that show care and commitment to protecting our local environment while providing the community with safe and accessible food options. Our encouragement for you this month is to simply explore the local food source options around you and attempt to engage with the local farmers who may be your very own neighbor! Included below is a link to MCBP’s Living Local project – an environmental education initiative designed to educate the community about the beneficial environmental impacts of sustainable farming practices and encourage the consumption of local products. Below you will also find a list of local markets\, this list is not comprehensive\, and we encourage you to explore all of the potential market options near you! \nPlease visit: https://mdcoastalbays.org/the-programs/education/community-programs-and-resources/living-local/ to learn about five local farms and where to find their products and contact information. \n  \nLocal Farmer’s Markets \nOcean Pines Farmers and Artisan Market \nWhite Horse Park\, Ocean Pines\, MD \nYear Round \nSaturdays \n9:00am – 1:00pm through March 27 \n8:00am – 1:00pm beginning April 3 \n\nCamden Avenue Farmers Market \n1401 Camden Avenue\, Salisbury\, MD \nYear Round \nTuesdays\, 2:30 – 5:30 pm \n\nBerlin Farmers Market \nPitts and Commerce St.\, Berlin\, MD \nMay – September \nSundays\, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm \n\nLocal Seafood \nMartin Fish Co. \n12929 Harbor Road\, Ocean City\, MD \n410-213-2195 \nSeaborn \n12906 Harbor Road\, Ocean City\, MD \nThursday-Sunday 443-235-3448 or 443-397-2216 \nSkilligalee Seafood \nWest Ocean City Harbor \n443-235-1489

SUMMARY:Give A Day to the Bays:Field Journaling Training and iNaturalist
DESCRIPTION:Nature Journaling: \nNature journaling is a priceless tool for observation\, questioning\, and for documenting curiosity.  At some point in our lives\, we all engage in journaling. Maybe that takes the form of a diary\, memory book\, or simply just taking notes. When we journal\, we preserve thoughts\, inquires\, and memories. But one of the most beneficial things to come out of journaling is the gift of slowing down. As humans\, we are constantly exploring\, and all that exploration starts with observation and questioning. Field\, or nature journaling allows us to cultivate curiosity\, focus attention\, and gives space of reflection on those amazing observations. In this video\, we encourage you to join MCBP Education Coordinator\, Liz Wist\, as she embarks on one of her favorite activities\, nature journaling!  Participants will be lead through a series of tools and tips to use field journaling as a practice in exploration. They will also be introduced to a variety of journaling activities they can conduct right in their backyards. Nature journaling is for all ages. Happy journaling! \nClick here to access the video. \n\niNaturalist: \niNaturalist is a long-term biodiversity study that is fueled by citizen science data. Simply\, that means that ANYONE can submit a photo observation of a plant or animal to the database\, and that helps scientists track and monitor species. MCBP has started their own project on iNaturalist. This project is open to anyone to join\, and it allows our organization to build an inventory of Coastal Bays species! If you are under 13\, you need guardian permission. \nThe attached video describes how to become part of this group in detail. Click here to access the video! \nHere’s a link for iNauralist

SUMMARY:Discover Your Watershed - Showell Nature Preserve - On the Prowl at Showell
DESCRIPTION:At MCBP\, we make it a priority to provide opportunities to community members and visitors of all ages to explore and expand their knowledge of our watershed’s restoration properties. Community exposure broadens public knowledge\, and this knowledge helps ensure commitment to the longevity of those projects and support for future projects. This mindset inspired an education and volunteer involvement series in 2017 titled\, “Discover Your Watershed”. This public series introduces participants to public and private restoration sites in the Coastal Bays watershed\, while providing restoration and educational hands-on activities such identifying macroinvertebrates\, removing invasive species\, and planting wetlands.
